What is laminate flooring?
Laminate flooring is a popular type of synthetic flooring that simulates the appearance of hardwood, tile, or stone. It consists of multiple layers, including a core of high-density fiberboard (HDF) or particleboard, a photographic layer that mimics the look of natural materials, and a protective top layer for durability.
How is laminate flooring different from hardwood flooring?
Laminate flooring is a cost-effective alternative to hardwood. While hardwood is made of real wood, laminate is composed of synthetic materials. Laminate is generally more resistant to scratches, moisture, and wear, making it a suitable choice for high-traffic areas.
Is laminate flooring durable?
Yes, laminate flooring is known for its durability. The top protective layer helps resist scratches, stains, and fading. However, the durability can vary based on the quality of the product. Higher-quality laminates, like Stanton Decorative Laminate, come with longer warranties.
Can laminate flooring be installed in all rooms of the house?
Laminate flooring is versatile and can be installed in almost any room. Ensure proper subfloor preparation and choose water-resistant laminates, like Stanton Laminate, for kitchens and bathrooms.
How do I clean and maintain laminate flooring?
Laminate flooring is easy to maintain. Regular sweeping or vacuuming to remove dirt and debris is essential. Clean spills promptly with a damp cloth. Stanton laminate is safe for steam and wet mopping. Follow the maintenance and care guide located on Stantonflooring.com
Can laminate flooring be installed over existing flooring?
In many cases, yes. Laminate flooring can often be installed over existing flooring, such as vinyl, tile, or hardwood, if the surface is flat, clean, and in good condition.
Can laminate flooring be refinished?
Unlike hardwood, laminate flooring cannot be refinished or sanded. If it gets damaged, the affected planks usually need to be replaced. Proper maintenance, such as using furniture pads and avoiding sharp objects, can help prevent damage.
What is the AC rating, and why is it important?
The AC (Abrasion Class) rating indicates the durability of the laminate flooring. The scale ranges from AC1 (light residential) to AC5 (heavy commercial). For most residential applications, an AC3 or AC4 rating is sufficient. Higher AC ratings are recommended for commercial spaces or areas with heavy foot traffic. NuvoMax carries an AC4 rating and NuvoLux carries an AC5 rating.
Can I install laminate flooring in radiant heating systems?
Yes, laminate flooring is compatible with most radiant heating systems. However, it’s crucial to follow the Stanton installation guidelines and ensure that the heating system does not exceed the recommended temperature limits.
Can laminate flooring be installed on stairs?
Laminate flooring can be installed on stairs, but special stair nose pieces are often required for a finished look. It’s essential to follow the installation instructions. Stanton will stock a flush stair nose along with T-molding, end caps, and a reducer.
Is underlayment necessary for laminate flooring installation?
Yes, underlayment or “pad” is generally recommended for laminate flooring. It provides added support, helps with sound absorption, and can enhance the overall performance of the floor. Our Stanton Laminate Flooring comes with the pad already attached for ease of installation and added value.
Can laminate flooring be installed over a concrete subfloor?
Yes, laminate flooring is suitable for installation over a concrete subfloor. Ensure that the concrete is dry, level, and free from significant imperfections. A moisture barrier is necessary to prevent moisture from reaching the laminate.
Are there environmental considerations with laminate flooring?
Laminate flooring is generally considered environmentally friendly, as it often uses recycled materials. Stanton Laminate Flooring is certified by Green Guard Plus for low gas emissions.
Is laminate flooring suitable for homes with pets?
Laminate flooring is very pet-friendly, as it resists scratches and stains. Stanton Laminate Flooring comes with a water-resistant warranty which also covers pet accidents. See warranty for details.
Can I install laminate flooring in a commercial space?
Laminate flooring with a higher AC rating, such as AC4 or AC5, is suitable for commercial spaces with heavy foot traffic. Stanton Laminate Flooring is an excellent choice to most main street commercial applications (coffee shops, bookstores, doctor offices, churches etc.). See the Stanton warranty for details on specific commercial applications.

The same can be said for your home’s walls or any adjacent flooring. That’s why we require leaving ¼ inch space next to walls and adjoining flooring to allow for the contraction and expansion that a home’s construction materials experience.
